The Company

Orphidia is leading the development of next generation medical technology which will transform medical testing and the healthcare industry. Based in London and San Francisco, Orphidia is developing a marketplace platform for on-demand lab tests. Our portable system can simultaneously run all the common lab tests for liver, kidney, cardiac, thyroid, and hormone levels with results provided within 20 minutes. Our technology enables faster, easier testing to find and treat disease earlier and at significantly lower cost. Orphidia is funded by well known Silicon Valley investors and is targeting rapid expansion in the US medical market through its partnerships with premier US health systems. Orphidia's technology will change healthcare, expanding access to testing globally and enabling the practice of medicine to become truly information based.

The aims of this Internship

An exciting opportunity for a talented individual with strong background in biomedical science. Reporting to the Head of Biology you will play a pivotal role within the organization helping in the development of novel assays.

Activities, duties and responsibilities

Preparing solutions for chemical and biological experiments;
Supporting the biology team in all design experiments;
Documenting and maintaining up to date laboratory notebooks, with records of all experiments and their outcomes;
Providing feedback on success of current development and suggesting improvements, where relevant;
Contributing to development progress and overcoming technical problems in discussions with the core development team;
Contributing to the efficient functioning of the company’s facilities, including the maintenance of laboratory equipment;
Supplier management, and sourcing materials for experimental/development work;
Information-gathering and preparing documents to support technical development;
Adhering to all safety regulations and protocols in the laboratory and office;
Any other tasks requested by management team that are commensurate with employee’s role.

Skills and Experience that will be useful for this internship - these will be used to shortlist candidates

Enthusiasm, determination, initiative, ability to think critically and to trouble-shoot experiments, good communication and organizational skills are required.
A grade of 2:1 (or higher).

Special physical or sensory demands
 
The intern will be involved in laboratory routine procedures (solutions preparation; ELISA; polymer surface modification;etc)

Benefits and Tangible Skills the intern will gain

At the end of the 6 week internship, the intern would have the basis for developing an immunoassay and its application within the  disease diagnosis field, whilst being exposed to good laboratory practices.

This opportunity is part of the UCL Careers Summer Internship Scheme. Part of the wage for the successful intern is provided by Santander Universities, but the successful intern will be paid the full amount through the host company's payroll as normal.
