The Company

Cause4 is a social enterprise launched in May 2009 to support charities, social enterprises and philanthropists in development and fundraising across the charity, arts, sports and educational sectors in the UK and internationally.

Cause4 champions disruptive philanthropy and new ways of scaling up charities and social enterprises. A thriving corporate portfolio means that we are increasingly engaged to run CSR programmes for organisations such as Close Brothers, Axiom Law and Santander and to advise and lead the set up of Corporate Foundations.

Since 2009 we have raised over £48 million for the clients with which we work and regularly raise over £500k charitable income per month. Cause4 is now a registered B Corporation.

We work in three main areas:

  • Strategy, fundraising and social investment;

  • Philanthropy;

  • Enterprise and talent development.

    We specialise in brokering and delivering effective partnerships and collaborations across the charitable sector.

Aims of the internship

Cause4seeks to support the development of the talent and skills necessary for creating a dynamic and resilient charitable sector fit for the 21st century. The Cause4model of talent development is experiential and stretching, giving participants extensive hands-on learning, mentoring and coaching, as well as access to a range of training opportunities focused on developing creativity, pro-activity, innovation and vision whilst being firmly rooted in best practice and ‘real life’ activity.

Graduates are recruited for their curiosity, ability to enquire, think and reflect independently, as well as for drive and ability to apply skills practicality. All strands of the development programmes aim to fast-track the graduate’s early career so that they can develop proven and effective business development knowledge and skills within their time with us.

This internship is an entry route onto Cause4’s graduate training programme – the Entrepreneurship Programme. It requires a self-starting individual with a willingness and capacity to learn quickly and a passion for the work of charities and social enterprises.

The expected outcomes of the internship are:

  • Develop talented individuals to provide the 21st Century with candidates who are experienced in a range of charity sector skills.

  • Develop talented individuals to become experts in an area of their interest within the remit of Cause4’s work.

  • Provide the interns with a variety of tasks and development opportunities to enable them to thrive in their chosen careers.

  • Support the Cause4 team with their extensive and exciting portfolio of work. 

  • Continue to build on the successful relationship with UCL and their highly skilled students.

  • Potentially recruit interns to continue on with Cause4, providing them with an opportunitiy to grow within the organisation.

Activities, duties and responsibilities

This role will provide hands-on, practical experience and development of skills needed for fundraising, across a diverse client portfolio. It will be based at the Cause4 office in London.

- Developing a full understanding of individual profiles of specific clients within the portfolio of Cause4, and use this to help develop client strategy documents and fundraising bids
- Delivering on specific targets for client development research, to establish relevant background information and potential for receiving approaches for funding
- identifying all appropriate potential sources of income that will meet the funding requirements of a range of clients across the scope of Cause4’s strategic work streams
- Supporting team colleagues in drafting documents and producing statistics and figures for inclusion in project budgets, together with sets of measureable outcomes and evaluation methods

The successful candidate will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Trust and foundations identification, research and application writing;
  • Corporate Sponsorship prospecting, research and proposal development;
  • Idea generation and formulation;
  • Development of programmes and campaigns;
  • Development of social media and writing skills through writing for
  • Office and administration management
  • Working as part of a young team in a fast moving environment
  • Contribution and understanding of organisational development of a small business.
Each intern will be directly supported in this role by the Head of Development and other team members. Regular meetings will take place, where each intern will work on a personal development plan alongside their core duties.
Skills and Experience that would be useful for this internship - applications will be shortlisted on this criteria

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

  • IT literate;
  • A thorough approach to research and exceptional attention to detail;
  • Outwardly focussed and interested in new developments and sector trends, able to relate how changes in different arenas can work to the benefit of the organisation;
  • Essential personal qualities – strong ‘completer-finisher’, highly developed communication skills (oral & written) conscientious, positive ‘can-do’ attitude, team player though able to work independently and passionate about the work of charities;
  • Experience of working in an office environment
  • Experience of working in a team or a small charity or company is desirable
  • Experience of fundraising on some level is desirable though not essential

- An in-depth introduction to the charitable sector, with insight into the strategy and management practices of a wide variety of charitable organisations that are clients of Cause4
- An introduction to best-practise in Third Sector fundraising, as well as practical experience fundraising for clients from a variety of sources including charitable giving Trusts, Foundations, Companies and Individuals
- Experience building client relationships and managing a personal client portfolio
- Experience working in a fast paced, high-growth professional environment
- Improved adaptability from working to tight deadlines, and able to turn work around within a short time span where demands are liable to change at short notice
- Improved graduate career prospects in the charitable sector
- Potential for further employment at Cause4, on the graduate training Entrepreneurship Programme, based on the experience of the internship.

Degree subjects that might be most relevant for the role

Politics / International Relations / Business Studies – However Cause4 would also be interested in interviewing candidates from other subjects. Primarily we are looking for candidates with a genuine interest in a career in the charity sector.

This opportunity is part of the UCL Careers Summer Internship Scheme. Part of the wage for the successful intern is provided by Santander Universities, but the successful intern will be paid the full amount through the host company's payroll as normal.
