The Company

AccuRx is an early-stage startup developing software to eliminate inappropriate antibiotic use, in order to help tackle antimicrobial resistance. They combine decision support, behavioural nudges and data science and are starting in primary care. The company was formed when the founders met on Entrepreneur First.

Chain, our first product, provides decision support and patient advice in the existing workflow and has been accredited by and integrated with EMIS, the leading GP software system. Chain is currently being piloted in GP practices in Oxfordshire, and soon London.

Florey, our second product, will provide remote management via SMS message for patients after their GP appointment. The product is currently in development, funded by an Innovate UK and MRC grant.

Fleming, our third product, will use data science to provide an empirical prescribing recommendation based on the outcomes of past patients.

Whilst our primary goal is to improve prescribing accuracy, we also support clinicians to save clinical time, improve patient safety, keep a better audit trail and enable nurses and pharmacists to take on more of the workload.

Aims of the internship for AccuRx
  • Action the feedback we’ve had from clinicians into real product changes
  • Bring in talent with combined interests in medicine, behavioural insights/psychology and technology
  • Conduct patient focus groups to improve the patient experience of our product
  • Bring new perspectives and skills in the team
  • Provide current team members with further management experience and training
Activities, duties and responsibilities

The exact project may change nearer the time based on business needs, but the current plan for the internship is as follows.

AccuRx Chain currently generates patient advice that is automatically printed and sent to the patient’s phone. Currently this advice is relatively generic text. We have the technical capability to adapt all advice to each individual patient based on information from the patient’s medical record and gathered in that consultation. To be useful to clinicians, this advice needs to be generated instantly, be personalised enough to be relevant, but be accurate for each patient.

This project would involve consolidating existing patient advice, speaking with clinical experts, running workshops with patients, reviewing published evidence, developing logic for customisation and working with the development team to build the personalised advice into our existing software.

The intern will also be exposed to all other areas of the business and have the opportunity to visit pilot GP practices, work with our academic partners and if suitable stakeholders in government organisations such as Public Health England and NHS England. We are also part of several networks of high-growth startups (both in healthcare and other sectors) and can facilitate a range of learning and networking opportunities with other startups.

We work using Agile methodologies on two-week sprints. The intern will be fully part of this process, and so have good visibility of other activities in the company whilst working with us.

  • Interest in tackling one of the greatest health challenges and building products that users love
  • Reviewing medical literature

  • Self-starter who can really own the project and come up with ideas we couldn’t imagine

Desirable skills/interests:

  • User-research (e.g. running workshops, conducting interviews)

We will point the intern to some great resources before joining so that they can hit the ground running. We also have a wide base of skills both with the team and in our wider network, to support the intern.

The intern will also be fully immersed in the team culture – we have weekly team lunch, monthly dinner, group activities, learning sessions and provide free breakfast/fruit/snacks.

This opportunity is part of the UCL Careers Summer Internship Scheme. Part of the wage for the successful intern is provided by Santander Universities, but the successful intern will be paid the full amount through the host company's payroll as normal.
