Salary: Competitive Basic Salary - £23,500- £27500 (Depending on experience) per annum pro rata

A new and exciting position has arisen for a graduate to work for Total (Lindsey Oil Refinery Limited) to work as a legal Intern. The position will be for 12-18 months. The University of London will be shortlisting immediately.

The Company

Total Lindsey Oil Refinery Limited (“TLOR”) is based in North Killingholme, Immingham, North Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. It imports petroleum crudes from around the world via its joint venture jetty on the Humber and converts them into a variety of transportation fuels, heating oils and petrochemical products. It is a standalone refinery, so not connected to a captive distribution business or an integrated petrochemical facility, and therefore relies on its merchant sales. As the major affiliate, it represents Total’s Refining and Chemicals branch in the UK.

The Role

TLOR requires a high quality, accessible and cost-effective in-house legal and company secretarial service to ensure its management has timely and practical legal assistance and advice to support their objectives. Reporting to the Senior Manager for Corporate Services, TLOR’s Legal Section (“Legal”) has 1 in-house lawyer and uses a mixture of external counsel and some assistance from other legal departments within the Group to meet demand. Legal undertakes work in over 30 different subsections of legal practice, including:

  • Arbitration, Mediation and Litigation;
  • Commercial, Competition and Compliance; Corporate, Employment and Labour;
  •   HSE; Property; and Company Secretarial.
  • Legal actively manages external counsel and is responsible for managing its Section’s costs and budget. In addition to providing briefs on various topics, Legal also reports monthly on all major legal matters to senior management and the Refining and Chemical legal Direction based in Brussels/Paris.

Reporting to TLOR’s Legal Adviser and Company Secretary, the Intern will progressively increase their involvement in many of the above described responsibilities of the Section (except for those requiring UK legal qualifications).

Their mission will be based at the Refinery,  with occasion business trips to London to visit the shared service for Legal for Total’s English affiliates.  The successful candidate will start with – and remain responsible for - ensuring the prerequisite tasks and the publishing of the monthly reports on costs and legal activities are completed on time each month.  This will involve the use of Microsoft Excel (training will be given if required). They will be involved in the management of some projects.  It is expected that these two activities (reporting and project management) would take approximately 20% of their time - once mastered, the remainder being devoted to legal cases.

Benefits of the role

  • A housing allowance will be available housing allowance will be £750 pcm (£500 pcm if shared accommodation) plus council tax (or part of if shared property).  All other utilities will be the responsibility of the intern
  • The placement will be for 12-18 months in June.  The long term plan is to recruit the right person but this cannot be guaranteed at this point
  • The position will be based at the refinery in North Lincolnshire with occasional business trips to London (travel expenses will be reimbursed in line with company policy)
  • It is essential that the person can drive as there is very limited public transport to the refinery

The Candidate

  • Suitable position for Law graduates (previous experience would be ideal)
  • The work of TLOR’s Legal Department is performed predominately in English, with occasional necessity for French when working with Corporate companies or where translations are required (candidates must be fluent in French)  All legal work is carried out under the law of England & Wales, although international law experience is occasionally required.
  • Must have a Valid UK driving licence and access to a car
  • Must be willing to relocate if you are not based in the North Killingholme, Immingham, North Lincolnshire
  • This role involves an understanding of the underlying work of the wider business. An ability to work under time pressure is essential while maintaining consistently high quality of work output.
  • The position requires the flexibility to deal with a variety of urgent issues simultaneously that may arise on a daily basis. The use of initiative is actively encouraged.  Being a team player is vital
