Two exciting opportunity has arisen for a six month Graduate Internship, working as a Project Officer in the Gateway & Welfare Transformation Programme in Croydon Council. Gateway & Welfare is a new division set up to support individuals and families affected by Welfare Reform, and provide a holistic approach to finding sustainable solution to people having financial and housing stability. The opportunity is to help support the delivery of innovative cross-organisation projects to provide housing solutions for rough sleepers.

Before you apply, please check that you are willing to travel to the London Borough of Croydon.

The Council

Croydon is a distinctive and diverse place, and is London’s most populated borough. Croydon is about to undergo the biggest development and regeneration programme since the 1960s with £3bn of investment flowing into the borough over the next five years, building a positive future for residents and businesses alike.

We are passionate about the value of public services and our new headquarters has the customer at the heart of what we do. It brings together 75 services including council, Met Police, NHS, Jobcentre Plus, Croydon Credit Union and Citizens Advice Bureau under one roof, allowing us all to work together as one team. This makes now an exciting time to join our team delivering vital services to over 360,000 residents.  This role focusses on improvements in services which support residents, working across homelessness, housing, immigration, public health, and children and adults social care.

The Role

The successful candidate will work as part of an agile team delivering a range of projects as part of a fast moving Transformation Programme. The role provides an ideal opportunity to learn about the challenges and rewards of working in a project management environment in a large organisation.

The council is required to produce a review of homelessness in the borough, and then design a strategy to tackle the major issues confronting us.  We plan to complete this work by December 2018.  We will produce the review and strategy in partnership with our residents, partners and voluntary and community organisations in Croydon. We are looking to recruit a professional, enthusiastic and hardworking Project Officer to support and contribute to this high profile project.

We will not limit the level of involvement and ownership the successful candidate can work to.  So, if you are interested in housing and homelessness, committed, enthusiastic, flexible, and able to learn quickly we would love to hear from you. You will be working with the Gateway & Welfare Transformation Team, a wide range of partners, and will be shaping the way Croydon tackles homelessness for years to come.  The role will involve tasks such as:

  • Research and analysis concerning homelessness policy, good practice, statistics, and services
  • Writing material for the Council’s Homelessness strategy and review
  • Service mapping homelessness prevention, accommodation and support services
  • Interviewing stakeholders including residents, partners and  community organisations
  • Designing, preparing and organisation engagement events
  • Updating project plans, and providing updates and highlight reports
  • Liaise with internal partners (Gateway & Welfare, Planning etc)
  • Report on the above

One of the roles will work primarily with the Programme Lead on helping the department create a new Homeless Strategy. As part of this the successful candidate will support various engagement sessions with residents, partners and professionals, coordinate events, undertake research and draft strategic reports – so someone with research background and stakeholder engagement experience would be ideal.

The second role will work on a variety of projects to support Croydon council with tackling the Welfare Reform issues faced by residents in Croydon. This will be reviewing and analysing processes looking for service improvements, holding workshops with staff, completing project documentation (business cases, project plans, initiation documents, risk logs etc.) and so on. So someone who has had some project based work experience would be ideal.

Do let us know if you have a preference for either positions.

The Candidate

The candidate will need to be able to demonstrate excellent research, analysis, writing skills, as well as project and organisational skills. Work experience in projects or partnership working is desirable.

Key requirements:

  • Minimum 2.1 undergraduate degree

  • Strong people and relationship building skills

  • Either someone with research background and stakeholder engagement experience would be ideal/ OR some project based work experience would be ideal.
