An exciting 12 month graduate programme opportunity has arisen, working for Westminster City Council in the London Asylum Seekers Consortium department.

This is a full time position, starting ASAP so all applicants must be available to start immediately. Also, please check the location before applying for this position.

The Role

London Asylum Seekers Consortium (LASC) is a central resource for Pan London local authorities who provide services to unaccompanied asylum seeking children and young people (UASC) who arrive into the UK with no parent or responsible adult.  Our operation is within Westminster City Council which acts as the lead borough for this service.

Our services range from: provision of emergency accommodation (EA) for the young people new to the UK, arranging their safe transfer to Pan London local authority appointments, providing training on asylum and immigration and various issues pertaining to UASC, circulating e-bulletins, co-ordinating meetings and forums, collating data and general information, developing projects and initiatives, dealing with and supporting local authorities with ad hoc enquiries.

Our stakeholders are local authorities, Home Office, voluntary organisation and government agencies.

The internship will be based within the LASC team and will provide key business support activities.

Key tasks and deliverables;

  • Booking taxis to transfer young people 16/17 years from LASC Emergency Accommodation in Croydon to local authority appointment – Pan London.
  • Completing transfer booking form and emailing to local authorities and LASC Service Providers
  • Following up calls to a) taxi firm picking up young persons and b) local authority receiving young persons. Including contact with Service Providers
  • Uploading accurate information on young people on an Excel spreadsheet
  • Monitoring the number of nights young people spend in Emergency Accommodation and informing Croydon Council.
  • Monitoring LASC shared email folders
  • Administration duties for LASC training session and meetings i.e. booking rooms, sending notice of meeting to local authorities, compiling a delegate list, registration, tea and coffee
  • Sending out circulations and information to LASC Members Pan London
  • Chasing Pan London local authorities for data on young people
  • Assisting with LASC monthly e-bulletin
  • Keeping abreast of asylum and immigration in the media

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience in public sector and will get an insight into policy and legislation surrounding Asylum Seeking young people in the UK.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in Sociology, Social Policy, Social sciences, Communications and Research or other relevant subjects. They will also need to have;

  • Desirable updated DBS check
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills – including Word and Excel
  • Compassionate and understanding nature
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • The ability to address tasks quickly, accurately and efficiently
