Recruitment has opened for a 6-month paid Internship role with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. The successful intern is expected to start in October and will be based in our London Office.

The Company

The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 14th year, connects 94 of the world’s greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. We bring mayors from around the world together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 700 million urban citizens and their economies account for 25% of the global GDP. C40’s ‘Deadline 2020’ report sets out the critical role that the world’s major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change.

C40’s team of 180+ staff is headquartered in New York, with offices in London, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris and individual staff based across 25+ different locations. C40 is primarily funded through the generous support of philanthropic foundations.

The strategic direction of the organization is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors which is chaired by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the C40 Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. An eight-person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40. C40’s three core strategic funders are Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and Realdania.

Business & Innovation Team

C40’s Business & Innovation team has been created to support member cities in overcoming a number of existing barriers to climate action. This includes projects and programs to help present the economic case for climate action, assist cities in optimising their internal operations and capability in the use of data, and enhance collaboration with the private sector and other climate solution providers to drive innovation.

The C40 Business & Innovation team works with cities, business and other stakeholders to accelerate and innovate climate action and develop tangible solutions to climate challenges. This multidisciplinary team leads global programs focusing on co-creation and collaborative solution development, convening and knowledge sharing and developing best practice   frameworks and methodologies to regenerate urban areas, drive the green economy and implement the ambitious climate action plans of C40 member cities.

The Role

The successful intern will support the Business & Innovation Team and facilitate quality delivery of key C40 priorities. S/he will support the delivery of the team’s programmes to bring cities, the private sector and other climate solution providers together in solving politically important climate mitigation and adaptation challenges.

If selected, working a 40-hour week, s/he will have the opportunity to develop skills and understanding in a range of subject areas, gaining valuable experience working with international colleagues in a fast-paced and exciting global organisation.

The successful applicant will in particular be involved in the run up to Business & Innovation programme events at the C40 World Mayors Summit in Copenhagen, which will build a global coalition of leading cities, businesses and citizens to rally around the radical and ambitious climate action our planet needs. The Business & Innovation events will be an opportunity for a multitude of partners to innovate and collaborate through showcasing, co-creating and inspiring collaborative climate action.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Support the delivery of the multi-partner City Solutions Platform (CSP) programme, which facilitates the earlier engagement between cities and solution providers through a co-creation process on a global scale, in order to implement innovative solutions to priority city climate challenges;
  • Supporting CSP delivery will include:
    • Supporting engagement of city officials & scoping of city climate challenges, including building a business case around each challenge;
    • coordination of the logistics and content of a series of CSP online webinars and in-person co-creation workshops, on a broad range of climate challenges;
    • supporting relationship management with various programme stakeholders;
    • supporting knowledge dissemination of outcomes and lessons learned from CSP activities, including:
      • Maintenance of the soon-to-be launched CSP website and online platform. The platform will showcase CSP city challenges for solution providers to collaborate and co-create solutions in a non-commercial, online environment;
      • Coordinating content and release of quarterly CSP newsletters;
  • Support the delivery of both the City Solutions Platform Live and the Cities and Business Forum events, both taking place during the C40 World Mayors Summit week October 7th – 11th 2019 in Copenhagen (must be available to attend, travel expenses will be paid by C40):
    • coordination of catering and logistics with the event stakeholders and invitees;
    • coordinating a communications plan around the events;
  • Wider support as requested.

Person Specification

  • Educated to at least first degree level/Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Strong problem-solving and strategic thinking capabilities and a delivery-oriented approach with great attention to detail;
  • Proactive self-starter who works well independently;
  • Strong organizational skills and prioritisation of tasks on different timeframes;
  • Strong written communication & confident interpersonal skills to engage professionally with staff and external Business & Innovation programme stakeholders;
  • Awareness of climate change and the challenges associated with mitigation & adaptation action at city level;
  • Understanding and interest in innovative climate solutions in cities;
  • Preferred experience in event logistics;
  • Preferred experience working internationally, particularly working across different cultures, languages and time zones;
  • Strong English language skills required with preference to candidates speaking one or more languages from C40 cities.
