London Living Wage employer, Waltham Forest Council is looking for a bright and ambitious intern to work in its exciting policy team. They will be responsible for developing council-wide policy and providing support to our newly formed Strategic Innovation Unit which is focused on four urgent areas for action: violent crime, communities, climate change and poverty.

The policy team and new Strategic Innovation Unit is highly influential in developing a range of policies and strategies that will have a lasting and positive impact on our communities and the serious issues of violent crime, climate change and poverty.

The Role

To provide effective support to project and programme delivery within Policy Design and Strategic Innovation Unit, providing processes and quality assurance over project progress reporting, including risk and issue management.

Based in vibrant Walthamstow the intern will play vital roles in the delivery of innovative change. Working with services across the council, the unit aims to enable a genuine cross-departmental and multi-disciplinary approach to each issue, leading to insightful and impactful interventions.

Key tasks will include:

  • Provide programme and project support to Strategic Innovation Unit initiatives.
  • Support the management of risk within area of responsibility. Ensure all stakeholders are aware of and comply with relevant regulations and procedures.
  • Assist in reviewing project deliverables and those responsible for them.
  • Manage workstreams/ non-complex projects within the Strategic Innovation Unit to ensure they deliver the required outputs.
  • Engage with operational services, stakeholders and partners to ensure commitment to improving public service delivery through effective project management.
  • Ensure that there is effective configuration management of all projects and programmes
  • Provide guidance on standards, methods, templates, processes and transfer best practice throughout the Council.
  • Ensure the necessary standards relating to safeguarding best practices/protocols are effectively communicated, monitored and maintained.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and / or external customers/ service users.Act as point of contact for the service.Resolve problems, within scope of role, escalating to line manager as required.
  • Organise and maintain records and documents using the appropriate council process / system.
  • Process expenditure requests, invoices and other financial documents, handle petty cash and expenses claims and other financial administration as necessary.
  • Provide support to staff where appropriate.
  • Act in accordance with all policies and procedures which apply to the job and understand the reasons for this.
The Candidate

The successful candidates will be great team players, communicators and relationship builders. They’ll have a “can-do” attitude, be extremely well organised and have a keen interest in local government policy.

  • A degree in the relevant subject
  • Interested in or a background in planning, monitoring and reviewing
  • Ability to be decisive and work well under pressure.
  • Willing to gain knowledge of relevant processes and systems and awareness of policy and procedure framework.
  • Good overall knowledge of Microsoft office applications.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Numerate and accurate with attention to detail.
  • Note-taking skills.
  • Experience of working for administrative functions on projects
  • Experience of creating and managing project control templates and administration.
  • Experience of administering project and programme management budgets.
  • Experience of managing a mixed and varied workload of conflicting priorities responding effectively to the needs of all customers.
  • Experience of report writing and communications for a variety of audiences, applying expert knowledge.
